Blue Mountains and Grand Canyon

Step after step we're dropping into this entirely different world. The vertical walls are overgrown with mosses and huge ferns are growing on even the smallest terraces. In the coarse of the years, the Grand Canyon of Blackheath was formed by the water into the regions sandstone, and inside the canyon we're experiencing the interesting changes of lights and shadows. Hiking through this gorge feels like a journey into a different time and within these just 3 hours, we are completely beguiled by this nature.

We are in the middle of the Blue Mountains National Park, just a bit over 100km west of the metropole of Sydney. Smaller and bigger rivers have formed impressive gorges and landscapes over the years and nowadays the valleys are surrounded by vertical sandstone walls, sometimes hundreds of meters high. Depending on the microclimate, the vegetation changes between light eucalyptus forests and dense, green rain forests.

During a two-day trek through the Grose Valley, we experience all this different landscapes in a very impressive way. The small path is sometimes pretty overgrown and we have to find our way through bushes and over trees. Sometimes, we almost expect a dinosaur just behind the next corner. After spending a night directly along the river, we reach the wonderful Blue Gum Forest with it's impressive high eucalyptus trees and diverse birds in the late morning before steep and wet steps through an almost vertical wall bring us back to the village of Blackheath.

Along with all the hiking, we also had a lot of fun with all the people we met. Whisky in the evening and French toast (with egg!) in the morning with our neighbors from the camp ground, 3 funny and nice Aussie climbers or BBQ with the other guests and the young managers at guesthouse "The Cecil" in Katoomba.

Best wishes, Alles Liebe
